Bridgelux and Molex partner on Helieon LED light module and socket

LED chip and array manufacturer Bridgelux has partnered with interconnect specialist Molex to develop the Helieon LED Light Module. The product is targeted at lighting manufacturers and is intended to drive mass-market adoption of LED lighting.
Luminaire designers can use Helieon to develop products in which the LED source can be easily replaced and upgraded, and do so at price points that offer short payback periods for solid-state lighting (SSL) installations.

Jason Posselt, VP of marketing at Bridgelux, said, "There are a couple of pain points associated with SSL," specifically cost and ease of use. He noted that customers like the socket and bulb concept, stating, "Helieon delivers a separate source and socket solution."
Helieon is a two-piece design. The light socket or lamp holder is permanently fastened into the luminaire. The light module is inserted into the socket with a push to make the electrical connections and a quarter turn to lock the module in place.
Mike Picini, vice president of SSL at Molex, stated "We heard it loud and clear from customers that flexibility is an absolute must." Helieon will allow fixtures to be designed independent of the choice of lighting in terms of color temperature, lumen output, and beam.
At launch, the Helieon family includes a choice of 800- or 1200-lm light modules that the companies rate as roughly comparable to 45W and 75W incandescent bulbs. The modules come in a choice of 3000K warm white or 4100K neutral white color temperature choices. And the family includes a choice of 24º, 32º, or 50º beam angles.
The Helieon light module is 80 mm in diameter or just over 3 in. With the light module mated to the socket, the assembly measures 27.6 mm or just over 1 in thick.
In high volumes, the 800-lm modules will cost around $20 while the 1200-lm module will cost around $25. The socket will be in the $2 range. The companies claim that these prices will offer the two-year payback that seems to be the tipping point for the installation of SSL products over legacy technologies.
Note that the pricing does not include the driver electronics. The Helieon concept assumes that the driver would be integrated in the luminaire just as many current light fixtures include a ballast. It would depend on the luminaire design as to whether the driver electronics could be easily removed and upgraded.
The two companies have jointly developed the Helieon technology and brand. And both companies will sell light modules and sockets. Moreover, the companies appear intent on promulgating the technology more broadly. Picini said, "The idea was to drive a new socket into the industry."

The new economical LED troffer kit upgrade is now available for purchase both in the UK and internationally via all major electrical distributors. The kit, consisting of a modular design utilising a series of OMNI® LED light engines, is specifically aimed at the health care & education sector, to make an upgrade to LED lighting fast, efficient and economical.

Over five hundred years ago, Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest creative minds ever, immensely talented as an engineer, scientist and inventor said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”. He could not be more right. The modern world and economic circumstances are demanding that issues need to be resolved with a simple solution, at a minimal cost and in a short space of time.

Busy 24/7 operations, such as hospitals, clinics and public spaces, have little time for maintenance and are facing ever reducing budgets. With the unique luminaire retrofit kit, lighting can be upgraded in just five minutes. Made in Britain, this unique LED light module allows the upgrade whole floors, wards and even complete premises to energy efficient luminaires in a very short space of time, leading to large savings on installation and labour costs.

A further benefit is the modular design, which makes the kit suitable for all applications, from corridors to task intensive areas such as surgeries. Furthermore, as the fitting does not require access above the ceiling void/space, there is no need to worry about any hazardous substances & settled dust that may be present, therefore locations with asbestos ceilings or structural limitations can now benefit from this economical LED based solution.

According to Nathan Edwards of the Sedna Technical Sales division: “We specialise in innovative lighting solutions such as our replaceable OMNI® light engines. We highlighted the issue of too many throw-away luminaires when we launched our OMNI® light engines for retrofit installation and long-term serviceability in October of last year. The response was phenomenal and working with contractors and installers, we identified an opportunity for improvement . This led to us developing the complete LED retrofit troffer plate for a complete install in under 5-minutes, with the magnetic and modular design of the kit.”

Industry leading innovative design received credible recognition from Electrical Times as simple, economic and efficient LED upgrade. The LED troffer was short-listed as a finalist in forthcoming Electrical Industry Awards 2015.

LED Module Application Methods

1、LED specialized switch power supply.Power supply only can be moistureproof but can’t be waterproof ,so it’s necessary to make waterproof measures when put power supply out.
2、Both opening and closing drivers should be conformed to LED module features, regulate the output voltage, don’t rotate the tuning button optionally when using.
3、All LED modules uses low voltage input, the power supply needs to be installed within 10m from the led sign module.
4、There are positive pole and negative pole of LED,pay attention to connect the right pole for ports when installating,if not, module will not shine ,the module will not be damaged, just need to transfer.
5、LED module use low voltage input,so in can’t be connected without power supply, otherwise the entire modules will be burnt.
6、When installate the module,it requires double side adhesive or carpenter’s glue,in order for module slot and blister bottom board stick firmly. When using double side
Adhesive,it needs to be added glass cement additionally, otherwise the module will be dropped after long time exposure by sunshine .
7、When installate the module in blister character or light box,try use 3 point line or 4 point line, try to from one circuit or many circuits when connecting the wire.that is connect the last pieces of module by positive pole and negative pole ,using red and black power line.
8、Power supply port module cascade should not exceed 50 pieces ,otherwise the tail end module voltage will attenuate, the brightness decrease.Although forming circuit can avoid decreasing,it’s not good to connect two many modules.
9、Non-waterproof processed module, should pay attention to rain water enter into character or box when installating.
10、Space between modules can be regulated by brightness,,each ㎡ should be controlled between 50-100 series..
11、When connect the power line to light box, first must connect the 4 point line or 3 point line to 4 led module or 3 led module.tie a big knot after the power line enter into the box, avoid pulling down by outer strength.
12、Single line length should be divided into 12m and 15m ,based on the actual usage. The protruding connecting cable ( including no used connecting cable end ) ,should fix it in the blister bottom board by glass cement ,avoid covering the lights.
13、Don’t push、crush、press the module components when installating, avoid components damaged, effect the entire effects.
14、To avoid connecting wire falling off the socket, there is a barb designed in socket,if not convenient to insert, you should pull it out and insert again . Be sure the connecting cable already inserted firmly, otherwise ir can caused falling off in the future.
Below some questions needs to be noted during installation:
1、Light box height requirement:
The whole light box height should be kept between 10-14cm,the purpose is to ensure the light consistency and get the best brightness effect.
2、Circuit installation and multiple line usage:
When installate the module in blister character or light box,try use 3 point line or 4 point line ,try to form one or many circuit in character or light box when connecting the wire ,even though some connecting wire in front of module falling off ,another pole can still working,no influence on effects at all ,meanwhile meets all module supplied current equably,as as to ensure the light shines equably.
3、Switching power supply connection port :
Attention:Single color module,positive and negative can be connected randomly ;
4、Layout dimension suggestion:
To ensure the light intensity equably, when layout and installate the LED module, equably and reasonably distribute led sign module ,this should be noted
Below conditions should be strictly prohibit :
1.LED module can not be connected to AC power.
2.Don’t badly push or crush the light during installating.
3.After sticking double side adhesive, must add glass cement reinforce.

Craftly use signage backboard focus on signage effect

Signage backboard has optional features,it can help your customer optimize the appearance of signage character.these characters also be called backer board, saddle back board ,or simply , Signage backboard .

Generally speaking, signage backboard is a horizontal panel ,hanging behind the signage character,as setting off .Usually backboard will paint certain kind of color ,and usually will choose the color which can furthest highlights the signage color.

Although it was called “signage backboard”,it’s structure is not always rectangle. It can based on the requirements, custom, design and make to different profiles and colors.

From the application scope, signage backboard can be widely used in any type of signage characters. An usual application is reverse lighting signage character(since these backboard can provide ideal reflector),after installed backboard, the lighting signage character effects will be more clear.
Common panel design and application.
The main purpose for choosing backboard is to provide a vivid background color for signage. For example, when you installe them on the surface,it can form a higher vision,or make a vivid comparison to outer wall surface of actual buildings, then the signage backboard can be useful . A carefully choosed backboard can greatly increase the attraction of the entire signage board.
Secondly, another purpose for signage backboard is to cover the defects on building surface .For example, if too many and complicated colors on the outer wall ,that will effect the surface installed signage, especially after comparison and insolation .A signage backboard will solve all those problems.
Another situation ,add a backboard, the purpose is to cover( or hide ) some wall face.Even if it’s already blend with the door after painting, but it’s appearance will effect the entire feeling of the signage more or less .however,if installed the signage backboard behind the signage character, that can reduce the effect on signage appearance,so the problem can easily be solved.
Choosing material and color painting
Usually, signage backboard is made up of aluminum . It has some abvious advantages, such as light weight, high tensile intensity ,strong corrosion resistance, that’s why it can get widely popularity from clients.
In color painting ,so as to optimize the signage appearance, enhance the comparison effects with building outer wall ,usually signage backboard will get this purpose by optional color .
Consideration on cost
Additional cost of signage backboard mainly depends on project scale and signage character sizes. If backboards can be cutted from single 4×8 inches aluminum board, that can reduce some project costs. On the contrary,if need one more signage board when designing ( or need 5×10 inches spec backboard ),that will spend higher and additional costs.
How to enhance backboard effects.
As a matter of fact, custom painting color is not the only way to enhance backboard effect. Also can reach the purpose by using ethylene boards.Besides, another designing concept is signage backboard connect reverse signage frame .The layout can presents the totally different effects during daytime and evening,so as to increase deepen the impression.
Last suggestion on installing backboard: Don’t installe reverse lighting signage character on smooth signage backboard surface.Otherwise,it will appear “mirror image” on the surface, when sun shines,it will reflect LED lighting module or signage wiring, effect the entire effects.
It is abvious that this is not the ideal effects. In fact,if using reluster or satin light when installating reverse signage character on backboards, that can avoid every unwanted reflection, this effects will be much better.

In all, signage backboard is an important part in signage design, choose a suitable signage backboard can enhance the visuality and exposure rate, increase the entire effects for signage. When using signage backboard ,if some details were noted, you will get the most profit by spend the lowest cost.

New Chevrolet Camaro with Interior LED Lights Debuts in Europe

The new Chevrolet Camaro is being unveiled for the first time in Europe at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. HELLA is providing a new kind of interior light concept for the iconic performance car, giving the interior a distinctive design. The color changes slowly throughout the vehicle in a subtle, flowing pattern from the center screen.

The ambient interior lighting plays a major role in the vehicle and is controlled from the first navigation level of the infotainment system. From here, the driver can either directly select 24 different colors, link the color of the interior lighting to the driving mode or activate "show mode."

For the first time ever, the color no longer changes in a static fashion. In other words, not all light guides change color at the same time; instead the change is dynamic. Starting from the center screen, the color change moves to the drinks holder and doors like a continuous strip, creating a unique experience for the driver.

What's more, the driver can link the interior lighting to the driving mode and for example, enjoy a gentle blue interior in "cruise mode." In "track mode" the interior lights up a strong orange and in "sport mode" a racy red. "Show mode" is a separate light show, which can be used in park mode and illuminates the interior in various color families in a defined order.

Another special technical highlight is the fact that all the colors in the interior are matched to one another despite the use of different materials. The light guide of the head-up display is surrounded by a gray cover, which in daylight fuses into the black cover of the dashboard. At night, however, the light has the same effect as the other light guides in the ambient interior lighting.

Calibration of the LED modules during the production process is more complex as a result. Not only do the LED colors have to be selected, but they also have to be sorted by intensity and brightness. The correction matrix produced for each individual LED chip also contains information about the material's color change. This color change was measured by the HELLA engineers during the development process so that exactly the same tone is achieved everywhere.

Not only is HELLA providing the lighting equipment for the Camaro, the company also developed the controls for this new interior concept. The software of the existing Ambient Lighting Control Module (ALCM) control unit was refined to be able to implement the different lighting scenarios in the interior.

As a special feature, parts of the lighting package can be retrofitted. For example, there are additional footwell lights for the vehicle models not fitted with the optional interior light package and the doors can be interchanged. The driver can then manually control the interior lighting with a control unit.

The project was carried out in the international HELLA network. The US site in Plymouth, Michigan and the interior lighting competence center in Wembach, southern Germany were responsible for project management and development. Development of the electronics was supported by the site in Dera Bassi, India and mechanical development involved HELLA Automotive Mexico. The light guides and control unit are also being produced in Mexico. The interior lighting site in Bratislava, Slovakia is handling LED module production and calibration.
